Possible solutions applicable for:
Microsoft Windows, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and 7 users
Run the Disk Cleanup
Open My Computer or computer as per your OS and
Right-click on the system drive that you wish to regain hard disk drive space; for an instace, right-click on the C: drive.
Select Properties.
Within the first tab (General), click the "Disk Cleanup" button.
This Windows built in utility looks for all the temporary and unused data within your system drive and displays it to you so that you can remove it.
Remove all old programs and games that are not in use now
· Click Start-> Click Control Panel.
· Double-click Add/Remove Programs or uninstall a program.
· Within the new window select the program you wish to uninstall and click the Remove button or Uninstall/Change button.
· Reboot your PC.
You may use other good uninstaller or a good PC repair, PC cleaner utility software such as Revo Uninstaller or any other reliable computer cleaner tool to remove this data.
Disable System Restore
Note- After disabling system restore feature you will not be able to restore your system. This is recommended you to take a backup of your system so that you can use if required anytime later.
Microsoft has decided to reduce the space by default the system restore features consumes. The below steps show how to turn System restore off. It is very easy to perform and you can do it in just few minutes.
- Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and open System Restore. OR you may type System Restore in your start search and click to it.
- Within the System Restore window, click System Restore Settings.
- Within the System Restore tab you can either check the Turn off System Restore on all drives to totally disable this feature, or select the Settings button and reduce the space usage, which is suggested.
Disable hibernation
The hibernation mode is commonly turned off by a Windows user. If you are not using this feature, you can disable this feature to free up some amount of the disk space.
Steps to disable it:
- Click the Control Panel and Double-click the Power Options.
- Within the Power Options Properties window, click the Hibernate tab.
- Uncheck the "Enable hibernation" option to disable the feature, or check the box to enable it.
Few other tweaks to gain the hard drive space
Get rid of all temporary files
· Click Start -> ; Run->; Type in %temp% and remove all files when temp folder opens select and delete all.
The aforementioned steps can certainly help you to provide the hard drive space and also help to speed up your PC performance. For removing other unwanted stuff you may also use some PC cleaner utility. There are different utilities that are of immense use and certainly help to speed up your PC and provide the hard drive space as well.
